On September 25, 2024 local time, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York. The meeting was chaired by Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira and attended by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, representatives from G20 members and guest countries, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and President of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly Philemon Yang.

Wang Yi said that the theme of this year's G20 Summit is "building a just world and a sustainable planet", which echoes the call of the times and the aspirations of the people. G20 members should shoulder their responsibilities as major countries, demonstrate their responsibility and set an example as major countries, and advance and improve global governance in the spirit of partnership. The meeting launched a Call to Action on Global Governance Reform, and the next step is to translate the initiative into action and the vision into results.

Wang Yi proposed that the G20 should be a supporter of UN reform. The G20 should uphold true multilateralism and refrain from selective multilateralism. As the core platform for global governance, the United Nations should better fulfill its duty and mission of maintaining world peace and promoting common development. The reform of the Security Council should be discussed in depth based on the principle of consensus and aimed at improving the representation of developing countries. The United Nations should play a central role in the governance of artificial intelligence, a cutting-edge technology. China supports the establishment of an AI governance mechanism within the UN framework.

The G20 should act as a promoter of global economic and financial governance reform. It is necessary to strengthen macro policy coordination and reduce the negative spillover effects of policy adjustments in developed economies. The G20 should implement the Global Digital Compact to bridge the South-North digital divide. Additionally, efforts should be made to advance the reform of the international financial architecture and grant developing countries greater representation and voice. China supports Secretary-General António Guterres' efforts to promote reform of the global financial system.

The G20 should act as a facilitator of global trade governance reform. It must remain committed to building an open world economy, promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation, and foster a fair, equitable, and non-discriminatory trade and investment environment. The G20 should oppose all forms of protectionism and discriminatory or exclusive arrangements, ensuring that there are more bridges for cooperation and fewer trade barriers akin to small yards with high fences.

The G20 needs to be a champion of global development reform. It should accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, aiming for more inclusive, universally beneficial, and resilient development. The G20 should deepen global partnerships for development and promote synergy in supporting global development actions. In the past three years since President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Development Initiative, it has won the support of over 100 countries and international organizations, and more than 1,100 cooperation projects with various parties have been carried out. China is ready to continue strengthening cooperation with its G20 partners.

Wang Yi pointed out that peace and security are the universal aspirations of people worldwide, and "beating swords into plowshares" is a common goal of UN member states. China advocates for promoting a quick de-escalation of the Ukraine crisis by adhering to the principles of "no expansion of the battlefield, no escalation of fighting and no fanning up the flames by any party", so as to create conditions for timely peace talks. The situation in Gaza tests human conscience and sense of justice; the urgent priority is to achieve an immediate, comprehensive, and durable ceasefire, alleviate the humanitarian crisis, implement the "two-State solution," and accept Palestine as a full member of the United Nations. China is ready to uphold the spirit of partnership with G20 members, follow the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, advocate for the establishment of an equal and orderly multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and share development outcomes with people from all countries to build a better future together!
