On 8 April 2025, the Chinese Embassy in Singapore held a briefing for media and think thanks. Mr. Zhu Jing, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of the Embassy, shared the Chinese Government's position on opposing U.S. abuse of tariffs. More than 10 representatives from Lianhe Zaobao, The Straits Times, CNA, the East Asian Institute of the National University of Singapore, the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute and OCBC were invited to the briefing.

Mr. Zhu Jing emphasized that the U.S. abuse of tariffs severely infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, severely violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, severely undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system, and severely disrupts the global economic order. The Chinese government has taken and will keep taking resolute measures to defend its sovereignty, security and rights to development. China hopes that all countries can uphold true multilateralism, oppose all forms of unilateralism and protectionism, and defend the U.N.-centered international system and the WTO-centered multilateral trading system.

Media and think tank representatives expressed their concerns on the damage of the multilateral trading system.
