According to the reports from Lianhe Zaobao and the Straits Times, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink said to reporters on December 2, during his visit to Singapore, that the U.S. intends to live up to its rock solid obligations and commitments, noting U.S. assistance to Taiwan in defence and trade. The U.S. side has not released the transcript of Mr. Kritenbrink’s full remarks. Still, based on the reports, it is not difficult to see that such wrong comments on the Taiwan question violate the one-China principle and the stipulations of the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués, and run against what the U.S. side has promised. It also sends a wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. The Chinese Embassy in Singapore, therefore, deems it necessary to reiterate China's position and set the record straight.

There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China. The Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government of China. Relevant UN documents point out explicitly that "the United Nations considers 'Taiwan' as a province of China with no separate status".

The U.S. unequivocally recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal government of China in the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués. U.S. President Joe Biden, during the recent virtual meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, reaffirmed the U.S. government's long-standing one-China policy, stated that the U.S. does not support "Taiwan independence" and expressed hope that peace and stability would be maintained in the Taiwan Strait.

Nevertheless, Mr. Kritenbrink's comments have shown that what the U.S. says is one thing and what it does is quite another.

The Taiwan question concerns China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and bears on China's core interests. China's resolve to uphold its sovereignty and territorial integrity is rock-solid and the historical trend for China to achieve reunification is unstoppable. No one should underestimate the strong resolve, determination and capability of the Chinese people to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The U.S. should earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. Joint Communiqués and stop sending any wrong signal to the "Taiwan independence" separatist forces.
